A McDonald’s franchise on Queensland’s Gold Coast has banned children in school uniforms from the store between 9 am and 3 pm in a bid to cut local truancy rates.

Griffith McDonald’s Store Owner Darryn Savage calls the decision a “smart move”.
“It’s doing the right thing, by making the kids go to school.”
The Courier Mail reports that McDonald’s Elanora has posted a signs around the store saying “any student in school uniform will not be served between the hours of 9am-3pm” at the request of schools.
While Mr Savage applauds the move, he says there isn’t much of a need to introduce something similar in Griffith.
“Unlike the Goldcoast, we don’t have a problem here in Griffith, and the only kids we do get here in school uniform are those accompanied by a teacher, so on the way to an excursion or on the way back.”
The Courier Mail was unable to get comment from the store or local school principals, but added student attendance rates in the area were up to 2% lower than the state average of 91.5%.
