His victim, a 53-year-old woman, had walked to her car at 6.30pm on Thursday night, placing her handbag inside before getting in the driver’s side door.
She heard a suspicious noise and turning around saw a man running away carrying her handbag.
The 20-year-old man was quickly identified by Griffith Police through CCTV footage and was arrested within hours at an address on Anzac Street.
He was refused bail and was fronting Griffith Local Court on Friday morning – less than 24 hours after the offence.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing from a person and was sentenced to 12 months in prison with a non-parole period of six months.
The 20-year-old was on a suspended sentence for an assault charge at the time of the bag snatch – and was consequently re-sentenced for this offence, receiving a 10 month jail sentence with seven months non parole.
His earliest release date will be April 26, 2018.
