Lorraine Maxwell coordinated the day, with the intention of creating a social but competitive masters tournament, reminiscent of the former inter-town tennis competition played throughout many towns within the district up until 2008.
“It’s wonderful to see so many returning players who used to be involved in the regular inter-town comp, as the days were always a fun event and a great game of tennis,” she said.
The weather behaved well for the event, with the sky clearing to a cool but sunny day, just as morning tea wrapped up and matches kicked-off. Each player had three matches scheduled before lunch, followed by a final two sets to round out the afternoon. The results were of little concern to the players who were just happy to enjoy a few strong social matches.
There were over 40 players and their families who enjoyed the day and hopefully we may see other inter-town tennis tournaments organised throughout the district, as a result of the success of the Griffith event. Massive thanks to Lorraine for her hard work in organising the competition and to all the travelling players to made the effort to participate in a fantastic day of tennis.
A reminder also that Winter Wednesdays social comp is still braving the cool evenings up to and including 23rd August 2017, before the spring competition kicks off the following week. Check out the Griffith Tennis Club website or Facebook page for regular updates and more club info.
