There were few surprises for Griffith from the latest release of Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data from the 2016 census.
Population
The overall population of the Griffith Local Government Area is 25,641. This up about 5 per cent from the 2011 census.
In terms of gender the split its 50.1 per cent female and 49.9 per cent male. In 2011, males held a slight majority.
Age
The average age of Griffins is 37. This is up one year from 2011 and a year younger than the average Australian, who is 38.
Marital Status
Some 52 per cent of Griffins aged over 15 are married, 9 per cent divorced or separated, 7 per cent widowed and 32 per cent have never been married.
Australia-wide, 48 per cent are married.
Households
Some 73 per cent of Griffith residents live in a family household, while 23 per cent live alone and only 3 per cent in group houses.
Rent
Median rent is Griffith was recorded as $220 at the 2016 census, compared to $335 for Australia. It’s worth noting though rents have skyrocketed by as much as 20 per cent in the past year in Griffith.
Type of housing
Some 84 per cent of Griffins live in a separate stand-alone house, compared to 73 per cent of Australians. Houses in Griffith are more likely to have upwards of four bedrooms.
Housing tenure
Some 63 per cent of Griffith either own their house or are paying off their mortgage, while 32 per cent rent. Figures for Australia are similar.
Religion
While “no religion” was the top response Australia-wide, it remains down on the list in Griffith. Only 14 per cent of Griffins described themselves as having no religion, compared to 30 per cent of Australians.
Around 40 per cent of Griffith identified as Catholic, compared to 23 per cent Australia-wide.
Country of ancestry
Australian was the top response for both Griffith and Australia. In Griffith, 19 per cent were recorded as being of Italian descent, compared to 3 per cent Australia wide.
