This week Christine Del Gigante and Pam Young announced they’ll retire as Griffith City Library managers after 28 years at the top.
While their 1989 The Area News photo looks the same as the one we took this week, so too did the other big news stories of nearly three decades ago.
Ms Del Gigante, a history buff, showed us the two big stories being reported in our paper at the time they started their job share.
One was “Sydney’s airport crisis hurts rural sector” – explaining the urgent need to fix the congestion at Sydney’s only major airport Kingsford Smith.
It was feared that moving country services to Badgery’s Creek, a second airport due to be built by 2000, would disadvantage rural people.
In 2017 Badgery’s Creek is yet to be built, and the airport crisis still debated.
The other big story explained “Griffith employers are suffering a shortage of skilled labour” – no change in that situation now.
