And he did just that on the weekend after saying in this very column last week that he’d head out to Darlington Point to watch DPC take on the Waratahs.
In this week’s At The Bar, Speedy and The Area News sports journalist discuss their sporting weekends.
Ben: Mate, you stayed true to your promise and headed out to the Point on the weekend.
Speedy: I went out with Kenny Wells again and watched the Tahs and Roosters go around.
Ben: Did you bump into anyone?
Speedy: Simple Carroll was there, and he let me know he was there, too.
Ben: A special day for him as well as the two sides played off for the Jack Carroll Cup.
Speedy: A very special day and I thought it was a terrific touch at the finish in the main game when both sides got together for a photo after Graham presented the cup.
Ben: Those two teams in years gone by have developed a bit of a rivalry and playing for a cup like that makes both teams a bit hungrier but it’s good to see them leave it on the field.
Speedy: It reminds me, I can remember years ago when Geoff Foster coached the Point. Him and big Garry – the Bear – went out there. Being former Waratah players, there was always plenty of feeling in the game.
Ben: There’s nothing like a good rivalry.
Speedy: They were always entertaining, well they were for me anyway.
Ben: As long as you’re entertained, mate, that’s all that matters. And it was a good day out there.
Speedy: It was and they seemed to play it in the right spirit. There was a bit of push and shove there but that always happens. The two teams coming together at the end capped it off and well done to both teams and to Graham as well.
Ben: It’s a great way to honour Jack, no doubt about that. What else happened over the weekend?
Speedy: I’m still backing slow racehorses.
Ben: That’s a given.
Speedy: There was some huge upsets in the NRL, too.
Ben: Yeah, Titans knocked over the Storm.
Speedy: Newcastle beating Canberra, too. That’s probably the biggest of the lot.
Ben: I’d agree. I don’t mind seeing the Knights getting up, either. I’d even say the Rabbits getting up was a bit of an upset.
Speedy: I took them this week. I said to Gary Saunders, I’m going to give them one more chance.
Ben: Well, it worked out.
Speedy: And if Slammin’ Sam plays as well as he did, we’ll get a few more wins, too.
