Chris Slater was sentenced in Griffith Local Court on Thursday, April 20 – facing a charge of using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

The chase that saw him wind up there began one Friday morning in October after police arrived at a home on Heath Crescent and were told 24-year-old Slater had just fled the property over the back fence.

The two officers called for back up before noticing Slater sitting on a park bench across the road, armed with the silver steel baseball bat and got up and began to walk towards them.

“Come on ya f**king c***ts. . .come on ya dogs,” he challenged them, hitting the bat into his left hand before striking it into the fence of a nearby home.

From there the chase was on, with Slater making a run for it – straight into the path of a highway patrol car – which he also threatened by holding his bat above his head.

As the pursuit continued one of the officers pulled out his gun and yelled for Slater to “get on the ground”.

“Ah f**k,” Slater replied before dropping the bat and hightailing it over a fence into someone’s backyard.

Jumping multiple other fences Slater eventually barricaded himself in a home, which police then surrounded.

According to police facts as police spoke with the resident of the home, asking permission to come inside, Slater erupted out of a side window taking off again on foot before finally being brought down by police.

Slater was arrested and taken to Griffith Police Station where he informed police he had taken ice prior to his arrest.

Police noticed he was displaying signs of “excited delirium” and made the decision to take him to Griffith Base Hospital for treatment.

Slater pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 18 months in prison with a non parole period of 12 months.

He will begin his prison sentence in January of 2018 and will be eligible for release in January of the next year.
