Curators of the upcoming exhibition ‘RE//CREATING’ have been trying to change that bias for the past three years, with a series of exhibitions aimed at actively addressing gender inequalities in the creative industries already making some headway in the area.
Opening in Narranderra on Sunday, April 30 ‘RE//CREATING’ is the third and final exhibition in the series and will feature works from 23 female Riverina artists under the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day ‘be bold for change’.
An initiative of Western Riverina Arts, the organisation hopes for all of the local women involved the show is a chance to help forge a better working world with more gender inclusivity, by bringing female voices to the front through visual culture.
Narranderra artist Julie Briggs who has been involved in all three of the women’s exhibitions said it was a process she could only describable as genuinely wonderful.
“Being one of more than 20 women from the Riverina to be invited to take part was a great gift,” she said.
“Over the three years we were given opportunities to learn through critical conversations, to be supported by our peers and to express ourselves and develop our very diverse practices within a very supportive framework.”
’RE//CREATING’ will open Sunday, April 30 at 2pm at the Narranderra Arts Centre and will run until Saturday, May 13.
