In 1997, Griffith couple David and Julie Murray made the risky decision to sell their rice farm and buy into the Donut King franchise, opening their store in the newly-established Griffin Plaza.
“We make a few hundred of our hot cinnamon doughnuts a day, and if you do the maths we would have recently passed the two million mark,” Mr Murray said.
The couple’s achievements were recognized at a morning tea at the 20th anniversary of Griffin Plaza recently.
Retail Food Group CEO Gary Alford presented them with a commemorative gift to acknowledge their two decades of service in front of a gathering of shop tenants and locals.
The plaza was built on the old cannery site at the intersection of Crossing and Yambil streets in March 1997.
Property manger Julie Regan from real estate group Knight Frank has been involved since July 2016.
“It was great to see a number of customers who had shopped at the plaza for 20 years were at the event,” Ms Regan said.
It now contains a variety of clothing, book, food and coffee outlets.
Griffin Plaza, though, is different from shopping malls you find in Australia’s capital cities in one major way – parking has always been free and in abundance.
Even during peak periods, Griffith locals can duck in to their favourite store and be done with their shopping in the time it takes a Sydney-sider to find a vacant space.
David Murray said his franchise has long been a favourite for locals after establishing a family feel.
“Our three kids, Luke, Claire and Grace have all worked in the store,” Mr Murray said.
Mr Murray may be on a winner despite dietitians long criticising doughnuts for their high calorie content.
A 2012 study by Tel Aviv University’s Wolfson Medical Center demonstrated having sweet food like a doughnut for breakfast may actually assist in weight reduction by reducing food cravings later in the day.
