The Griffith Regional Theatre is celebrating three decades of art, culture and community events.
It was 30 years ago this month - on March 14, 1987 - that then-mayor John Dal Broi cut the ribbon to unveil the long-awaited Griffith Regional Theatre.
The culmination of months of work by a dedicated team of passionate arts supporters, the opening was preceded by a further 30 years of fundraising by the Water Wheel and Vintage Festival Committees and by Wade and Griffith shire councils.
Construction of the theatre was completed in February 1987 at a cost of $3.5million, and is the largest public theatre facility between Wagga Wagga and Mildura.
It is acknowledged in the industry as an excellent facility with a medium-sized auditorium (523-seat capacity), a large proscenium arch stage, high quality acoustics and state-of-the-art technical facilities.
A major upgrade in 2015 replaced the auditorium seating and carpet throughout the theatre.
The theatre plays a critical role in the cultural and creative life of the community. Patron numbers have steadily increased over the years, from around 20,000 in 2013, to almost 40,000 patrons in 2016.
Griffith Regional Theatre has a reputation for offering innovative and dynamic programs, with its season offering a diverse program of live music, classical and contemporary dance, drama, comedy and circus performances, as well as specialised children’s and educational programs, and morning melodies for seniors.
There is also a strong program of national and international events.
“The theatre relies and thrives on the support and interaction of the community,” manager Raina Savage said.
“Our season, education and community musical sponsors allow us to offer a broader, more expansive range of programs and also allows us to sponsor or supplement the costs for attendance by those who may otherwise not be able to experience the magic of theatre.
“Members and friends are the backbone of the theatre and we love to be able to give back to them.”

Anniversary celebrations
A fabulous “birthday” party will be held for the theatre on Thursday, March 30 from 6pm.
It will be a night of glamour, nostalgia and culture with Ms Savage encouraging guests to dress to the nines.
“We are asking the community to dress up in style to help us celebrate 30 years of theatre in Griffith with free champagne, live music, nibbles and of course a spectacular anniversary cake,” she said.
“There will also be a very special sneak peak performance by some very Wicked people.”
There will be a video installation of the Theatre's colourful history and the launch of a new exhibition in Artspace – Fancy Pants – by local artist Anthea da Silva.
From 7.30pm, the 7 Sopranos will perform their new show, Songs from Stage and Screen (ticketed event).
It is 1952. Radio broadcasters predict that television will be the death of radio. The 7 Sopranos must transform themselves from radio stars to TV stars. Will they succeed?
Take a step back in time with The 7 Sopranos and channel your inner Doris Day, Marilyn Monroe or Judy Garland. Dust off the record player, put on your Sunday best and brace yourselves for a flurry of nylons, killer heels and eye-poppin’ lipstick.
“It made sense to us to celebrate the theatre's history by continuing the tradition of presenting the very highest quality performances,” Ms Savage said.
“We encourage our guests to grab a ticket and enjoy the luscious voices and exquisite harmonies of the 7 Sopranos in their fabulous new show.”
Members tickets to 7 Sopranos are $30. Full price $45; concessions $40.
Historical display
Griffith Regional Theatre’s freshly painted Artspace will host a vibrant display of plans, posters and photos celebrating the history of the theatre from its opening on to the present day.
The display will be held from March 5 to 24.
“We invite the public to take a drive down nostalgia highway with a selection of beautiful, touching and hilarious images that offer a glimpse into the community that dreamed and built the theatre, that trod the boards in amateur musical and dance productions, and turned out in droves to enjoy a diverse and ever growing program of professional theatre and events,” Ms Savage said.
