However, financial obstacles can be some of the trickiest to get past in such a costly sport.
A new kart can set you back anywhere from $2000 to $6000 and upkeep sees the bill tick even higher with a set of tyres costing roughly $250 a pop being just one of the ongoing costs.
For one Griffith karter and his family, that strain has been eased with the help of Warburn Estate.
The winery has come on board to sponsor Ky Young for the upcoming kart season.
The 10-year-old thought it was “great” and dad Scott said the support was invaluable as Ky shoots for the stars.
“It’s a huge help,” Scott said.
“With Warburn’s help we can go to more races and Ky can get some more experience.
“We’re going to do the state titles, they go from Orange to Newcastle and down to Wollongong.
“We’re going to go down and to the Victoria series as well and do them.”
Scott – who’s motorsport background is in powerboat racing – said his family stumbled into the world of karting before Ky fell in love with the sport.
“We were just were looking at it [karting] for my two boys and thought we’d give it a crack but only one took to it,” Scott said.
“It’s a really good club, everyone helps each other out and it’s a good family sport.”
The decision to come on board was an easy one for Warburn Estate.
“We wanted to support Ky on his journey in go karting,” Warburn Estate’s Christina Sergi said.
“We like supporting locals and we just wanted to make sure we could help him get around Australia.
“It’s good to encourage young people to do anything and support them and their futures.”
The karting season will start this Saturday when round one of the Southern Stars Series kicks off.
It will give Ky a chance to use his new set-up after upgrading his kart from an older European model to a David-Sera-branded version.
