Scorching temperatures virtually put a line through all sport across the Riverina last weekend but Saturday’s AFL pre-season fixture is set to be blessed by cooler weather.
Already 2500 tickets have been sold for AFL football’s return to Narrandera, featuring Greater Western Sydney (GWS) and West Coast.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a maximum of 26 degrees for Narrandera on Saturday, a big win for organisers and fans given the 2.05pm start time.
AFL Southern NSW development manager Marc Geppert said everything was shaping up well for Narrandera’s first AFL game since 2010.
“Obviously the forecast is for favourable weather at this stage and we’re hoping now that we’re getting a good run with the weather, there are no barriers for people not to go to the game,” Geppert said.
“With the Giants bringing our local players to Narrandera, it will be really good for our region to get behind our local boys and support them.”
GWS will arrive in Narrandera on Friday night and host a meet and greet with members and fans.
The Giants playing group will head to Narrandera Sportsground at 5.50pm for a brief signing and photograph session at 6pm.
Meantime, Riverina-bred Giants players Zac Williams, Matt Flynn, Harry Himmelberg and Jacob Hopper will tour the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) on Sunday and Monday.
All four will be apart of a Super Clinics on Sunday. They will begin at Narrandera at 10am on Sunday, before heading to Leeton (12.30pm) and Griffith (2.30pm).
The four Giants players will then split and spend Monday visiting the communities of Griffith, Yenda, Lake Cargelligo, Rankins Springs and Beelbangera.
It will include a Northern Riverina Super Clinic at Lake Cargelligo at 10am on Monday.
