IT SEEMS like just yesterday the Christmas trees and lights were being packed away, meaning another year was done and most likely the credit cards were maxed out once again.

Now, all of a sudden Valentine’s Day is less than 24 hours away and you still haven’t bought your significant a gift or even thought about ordering those often expensive flowers.
Never fear, the following list can help you achieve Valentine’s Day on a budget, but it will still have your Valentine smiling for the next 12 months.
Love the day or loathe it, there’s no doubt we could all do with a little fun and happiness in our loves, so bring on the sap and the soppy.
1 Don’t buy flowers.
Yes, that may seem harsh, but there’s plenty of other ways to show your love and affection. Most of us lucky enough to live in towns like Leeton probably have a garden of our own. Pick a few from there and leave in a nice vase on the dining room table. It might not be much, but it’s the thought that counts. If you don’t have a garden to choose from, ask your neighbour to pinch some of theirs.
2 Bake something
Sick of buying the expensive chocolate or forking out for one of those over-priced chocolate bouquets? Why not head into the kitchen. It’s a easy as buying a packet mix of brownies or chocolate cake from your local supermarket (especially if you’re not that great in the kitchen). Biscuits and cookies can also be packaged up nicely in a way that won’t hurt the budget, but will say “I love you”.
3 Stay in
Most restaurants are more than likely booked out at this late stage in the game. So, why not head into your own kitchen. Most couples have a favourite dish or two, so try cooking them at home instead. Your previously completed baked goods can also double as dessert. It may seem like just the norm, but with a little effort such as lighting a candle or two, it can change the mood and it will be without those restaurant prices.
4 Go out
I know what you’re thinking, I’ve just contradicted myself, but alas not really. By going out I’m saying head outside with a picnic dinner. Find a shady spot in a local park, the river or a special place the two of you may share. It can be as easy as a couple of pre-made dinners in a picnic basket while sharing a glass or two of your favourite beverage and watching the sunset. After all, most of us are craving quality time with our loved ones away from technology and this will do just that.
5 Have your own movie night
Shut up your house, lock all the doors and curl up with a good movie for the night. Make it one you’ll both enjoy. It doesn’t have to be a rom-com or other sappy show. Just enjoy spending the time together. Make your ow popcorn. I guarantee you’ll be comfier at home in your pjs than all dolled up to sit in the dark in a movie theatre.
There we have it folks. Valentine’s Day on a budget. It might not be your cup of tea, but if you can’t afford to shell out the big bucks, give it a go. It’s all about spending quality time together – whether it’s Valentine’s Day or not.
