It was an approach characteristic of everything Griffith’s Neighbourhood House stands for, as a local ‘work for the dole’ project gave the centre the facelift it desperately needed.

A Federal government program, ‘work for the dole’ teaches job seekers essential skills while benefiting community organisations.
As Griffith’s first project wraps up, participants have brushed up on their painting, plastering, maintenance and landscaping skills with the program helping build portfolios enabling them to enter the workforce, according to coordinator Kelly Thatcher. “They now have relevant skills to attract employment,” she said.
“Jesse Ciampa was a fantastic supervisor, helping to motivate them and teach all the skills they have learnt. The main thing is that they should feel really proud of what they have achieved.”
The group and their support system were on hand to celebrate the finished project on Thursday, even though participant Luigi Lenti said it had been an enjoyable project to be a part of. “I got to learn things but also I got to do things I haven’t done in a while, it was good to brush up,” he said.
Ms Thatcher put the call out to other employees who might want to become involved, asking them to give her a call on 0476 811 209.
