Three 40-over games remain with Leagues Club sitting in second position as the side meets Diggers in the Griffith District Cricket Association first grade competition at Yenda on Saturday.
While Leagues captain Paul Plummer wouldn’t say no to a one-day final berth, his main aim was to defend the two-day title.
“It’d be nice to win, I suppose, but for me, the timed cricket is the one you want,” Plummer said.
“All my focus is on that and if the one-day one comes along, that’s a bonus.”
On the overall ladder, the Panthers sit in third position.
It’s a spot Plummer is glad to be in after the chopping and changing he’s had to do throughout the season.
“We’ve had a very up and down year – I haven't had the same team on the paddock two weeks in a row,” Plummer said.
“To sit where we are with the inconsistency we’ve had – which I’m pretty sure has been the same with most teams – is pretty good.
“It’s good to have a couple guys come back now and hopefully we can create some momentum before the finals come along.”
For Saturday’s game against Diggers, Leagues will be without Plummer and Ben Leach.
However, players returning this weekend include all-rounders Jimmy Binks – who’s managed just three games this season – and Dan Bozic – who has five games under his belt for 2017/17.
Opening batsman Logan Matheson hasn’t played a match yet this season – due to a shoulder injury sustained playing for the Yenda Blueheelers – but is also set to return in the coming weeks.
Diggers possess plenty of strike-power but captain Pat Whittard is the danger man at the moment.
The batsman is coming off a century but Plummer had faith in his bowlers to get the job done.
“All teams have their couple of batters you aim to get out for a low score and Patty’s one of them,” Plummer said.
“We’ll need to bowl good areas to him but one good thing about our side is everyone does bowl.
“If someone’s not performing how’d we’d like them to, we can mix it up to get the right balance.”
