A decision to bat first at Exies No. 2 on Saturday could mean a big score for Coro or Hanwood in the Griffith District Cricket Association first grade competition but it only marginally enhances their changes of winning if this year’s results are anything to go by.

2474 runs have been scored on the ground in eight first and second grade matches this year with 1493 of those coming in the first innings of the match.
Of those eight first innings scores, four have been over 200 runs – only five 200-plus scores have been made across first and second grade this season –and Coro captain Haydn Pascoe wasn’t surprised by the high scores made at Exies No.2.
“You get good value for your shots, it has a fast outfield and anything that goes through the ring usually runs away,” Pascoe said.
“It’ll be foreign for us, we’ve played mainly at Westend all year where you have to work hard for your runs.”
While first innings score have been high, teams chasing haven’t faired badly.
Teams fielding first have won half the matches and losing the toss has benefited teams with five games going the toss-loser’s way.
Pascoe’s thoughts on the toss reflect the evenness of results at Exies No.2.
“I personally haven’t won many tosses,” Pascoe said.
“I don’t think it’s a bad thing having to chase runs – all the good sides have to do that.”
However, Pascoe is fairly certain what he’ll do if the toss falls his way.
“With timed cricket, I think batting is always the option to take,” he said.
“You’re in control of the game and in a one day game, you’ll think about bowling but end up batting first about 90 per cent of the time unless it’s a wet day.”
The Cougars will be out to claim their seventh win on the trot while Hanwood will be looking to consolidate its position in the top four.
