Liam Gordon Murphy, 41, of Little Bay, appeared in Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday, alongside his high-profile barrister Charles Waterstreet.

Mr Waterstreet told the court: "He pleads not guilty to the charges".

Wearing a grey suit and blue tie, Mr Murphy was supported in court by a man and a woman.

It is understood that Mr Murphy and the alleged victim initially met on the social networking site FetLife.com before agreeing to meet in person at a Kings Cross hotel.

Police allege Mr Murphy then sexually assaulted the woman during their encounter on August 24, 2015.

Mr Murphy is charged with two counts of sexual assault without consent, knowing the woman did not consent, and a charge of attempted sexual assault.

Court documents alleged he also injured the woman, causing "actual bodily harm".

His case will be mentioned again on January 31.

"The Wolf" published a book of his supposed sexual exploits with people he met online, and in 2015 a festival was held in the US dedicated to "Wolf--king".

Those who encountered Mr Murphy in real life say he worked hard to keep his identity secret, even with the women he was seeing.

FetLife website boasts 5.3 million members and claims to be the "network for the BDSM, fetish and kink community".

"Like Facebook, but run by kinksters like you and me. We think it is more fun that way. Don't you?," the welcome page to the website states.
