The traditional lead up to Christmas is rarely embraced before December 1, but it was fantastic to see so many people made an exception for the sake of what was a fantastic community event.
Scores of houses got into the spirit to have their Christmas lights out and ready during November, many in specific support of Griffith’s Got Spirit.
It’s those efforts enticing hundreds to jump on the Polar Express that evening helping to capture the imagination of an entire community.
The extra event underlines Griffith’s thirst for fun family events, and the scope for growth in not just this event, but others in the future.
There’s also Griffith’s love for the festive season.
There was a potential hole left in the Griffith calendar when the annual Christmas carols were abandoned for 2016.
But Griffith’s Got Spirit’s success means the city potentially has an annual Christmas event again.
For Mayor John Dal Broi and council it was an easy decision to go ahead with another event.
“I believe this is certainly the beginning of what i expect will be an annual Christmas event in Griffith,” Cr Dal Broi said.
“We didn't know it would be this popular and this many people would get involved...”
In fact, the response was so unprecedented, organisers have given the green light to another Griffith’s Got Spirit event – to be held at 8pm, Friday December 16.
“Council are so pleased Griffith’s Got Spirit was so successful,” Cr Dal Broi said.
“We are pleasantly surprised and to some extent overwhelmed especially because it's the first year and to have this much support is really amazing.”
The Area News and Griffith City Council-organised event will again take residents around Griffith to see the incredible Christmas lights.
Board the buses to tour the lights across the city with a special stop to see Santa.
Tours depart Memorial Park Griffith travelling around the city to view houses registering their Christmas lights.
This is a bookings only event, so no walk ups on the day.
