A Griffith woman has told police she believed her partner was capable of killing her during a terrifying October assault that left her bruised and battered.

The woman’s attacker was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in Griffith Local Court on Wednesday, November 30.
The woman had known her attacker for 20 years and had been in a relationship with him since March when the he was released from custody.
On the night of her assault the woman was in the kitchen making dinner when the man arrived home.
He knocked on the door and asked to be let in, however due to a previous argument the woman said no.
Within minutes he had kicked in the back door with his legs and in an attempt to stop further damage the woman relented and let him in.
But once inside he immediately walked over to her, grabbed her neck in both of his hands and began to choke her.
The woman managed to gouge the man’s right eye and make a break for the safety of her bedroom.
The man punched through the closed door with both fists before entering the room, pushing her on the bed, jumping on top of her and beginning to choke her again.
The woman was then able to knee the man, causing him to release his grip while she again made a break for safety, this time grabbing her car keys and running to a neighbour’s house.
The man gave chase, but was unable to recapture her.
When police arrived on the scene they noticed the woman had red swelling and cuts to the right and left side of her neck.
The woman told them throughout the man’s choking of her she had felt immediate fear that he may be capable of killing her.
