At a meeting on Monday night a motion was moved council install new opposing powered gates near the site of the previously decommissioned flood gates that would adequately protect the town from a one in 100 year flood event.
To not do so would load up residents’ flood cover premiums to $3000 a year as opposed to $1500, according to Paul Rossetto.
Chairman of the meeting Griffith Mayor John Dal Broi accepted the motion, which would cost $10 million, and said he would put it to council at their next meeting alongside a $2 million option that would provide protection for a one in 50 year flood. He said the community had indicated they would accept the cheaper option if council rejected their motion.
