TALL TALE: Toddler Sonny O’Neill eyes off a 6.1kg carp – one of the largest ever to be hauled out of Lake Cargelligo – he helped catch at last weekend’s Fisherama.
HE'S barely a toddler but little Sonny O'Neill has already snagged himself a whopper of a fishing tale.
The Lake Cargelligo two-year-old upstaged more than 300 seasoned anglers at the weekend's Fisherama, reeling in the biggest fish of the tournament and one the biggest ever to be pulled from the lake a 6.1kg carp.
Using a rod with live worms and an 8 pound line, little Sonny was perched on his mum's knee when the mud-munching behemoth hit.
"He nearly got dragged in and had to hand the rod to his mum," Sonny's proud granddad Stephen Brown said.
"Even she couldn't wind it in and actually thought she had a snag."
Mr Brown snatched the rod and began a titanic 10-minute fight with the "lake ness monster".
"He got to about five metres from the bank and began swimming away ... I really thought the line was going to break," Mr Brown said.
"I got Sonny to grab the rod while I wound it in so he could claim it."
And claim it he did, going into the record books as catching the largest fish in the decade-long history of the competition.
"I've lived here all my life and it's the biggest fish I've heard of," Fisherama organiser and president of the Lake Cargelligo Amateur Anglers Club Scott Golding said.
All up, 1483 fish were captured during the weekend event, up almost 1000 on last year.
Angler numbers also swelled, with more than double last year's entries.
