More than 60,000 Australians live with blood cancers, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and each day 35 new diagnoses will be made.
At the Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘Light the Night’ walk participants carry lanterns of different colours, white means the carrier is on their own journey with a blood cancer, gold signifies remembrance of those who could not beat it and blue shows support.
All three colours will be out in force on Friday November 4 when Griffith puts on its own ‘Light the Night’ walk at Collina.
The family night will begin at 6pm with the band Cactus providing entertainment as well as Zumba, dance performances, stalls, barbecues, face painting and lots of food available. When dusk falls the lanterns will be lit and a walk, push or wheelchair around the oval will take place.
You can register online before the night to beat the queues by following the link https://lightthenight.org.au/event/griffith
Griffith and surrounding districts have proven again and again how they will get behind and support people and causes in need and with blood cancers still the third biggest cause of cancer deaths in Australia, it is more important than ever to help Light the Night and raise vital funds.
With the help of Light the Night supporters the foundation is aiming for a cure and is currently supporting nearly 50 research projects.
The secret to beating blood cancers is with research - every $100 raised for the Leukaemia Foundation equates to an hour of research and over the decades this research has extended survival rates and improved treatment and support for patients, including accommodation and transport to medical appointments, all provided free.
Lanterns will be available for purchase on the night for $20. If you don’t feel like walking just relax and enjoy the family-friendly event.
How can you help? Go online to Light the Night and donate, register as a bone marrow donor at the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Register or give blood.
