Councillors Anne Napoli and Doug Curran have confirmed they have put their hands up for job, which will be decided in an in-house vote during Tuesday’s council meeting. Councillors have up until the night of the vote to decide whether they will run.

Dino Zappacosta is still weighing up if he will stand, but said the job needs to go to someone willing to support and assist the mayor.

The role of deputy mayor is also to fill in for mayor John Dal Broi if he is sick or otherwise unable to carry out his duties.

Cr Anne Napoli said she put her hand up for the role because the support from the community has been very encouraging and believes council needs good balance and change.

“I think it is time Griffith has a male mayor and a female deputy mayor, that will create a good balance on council, which I think the community needs,” Cr Napoli said.

Cr Napoli said she also hopes to encourage more woman to become involved in the community and council.

“I hope I can inspire even just one young woman to go for whatever her heart desires, only you can hold yourself back,” she said.

Hoping to make his return to the role is Doug Curran, who said Tuesday night's election will be the first real test of factionalism in the new council.

“Any councillor can nominate, however I think the community has sent a very clear message who they see as the leadership group of the forthcoming council. I respect the right of each councillor to stand, however I would question whether they are acknowledging the community's wishes or whether it is about ego and blind personal ambition,” Cr Curran said.

“The position is not ceremonial, it is about backing up and supporting the mayor, something I have been able to achieve over the last three years.”

Typically the role of deputy mayor is for one year.
