The Griffith Swans had wins in the under 13s football and the under 15s netball.
The under 15s Swans Red scored a 48-23 win over Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong and whilst it looked like a comfortable win on paper, coach Karen Conlan said it was anything but.
“We were only up by three at quarter-time and another three more at half-time,” Conlan said.
“We had a great third-quarter blitz to go up by 16. It was a really tough game and across the court the girls played a disciplined game – the referees even commended the girls on that.”
Macey Spencer had a big game in defence for the Swans and was named best on court for her efforts.
Conlan said Spencer played incredibly well but also had big wraps for the rest of the team.
From defence, to mid-court and finally attack, Conlan said all the players performed to the best of their ability in the final.
“We definitely peaked at the right time,” Conlan said.
“We pulled it all together, did the little things right and there wasn’t a poor player out there.
“We looked at the Olympics for inspiration and how everyone was playing for each other.
“All the kids felt valued and all did their role. They all stepped up above and beyond.”
The match in the under 13s football was similarly close and the scoreboard reflected that.
After four of the tightest quarters of AFL you’re likely to see, Griffith Swans Red came away to win 3.7 (25) to 3.6 (24) over Leeton.
Swans coach Jamie Bennett said the whole match was nerve-racking to watch but things went to another level in the final term.
“They [Leeton] kicked the first goal of the last quarter and went to a six-point lead with about five or six minutes to go,” Bennett said.
“In the scheme of things it was a big lead in a fairly low-scoring game.
“Credit to our boys, they pretty much dominated the last six minutes but it was tough work to get in front.
“It was a pretty special performance when those boys are facing the prospect of pegging back a lead and to go about it the way they did was great.”
Bennett said it was made all the more special by the youth of the side.
“There’s a dozen of the 20-odd players who can front up again next year,” he said. “That’s pretty good for the club that there’s that sort of talent coming through.”
