A Melbourne artist has claimed the National Contemporary Jewellery Award during the biennial event at the Griffith Regional Art Gallery on Saturday.

More than 90 jewellery makers and artists from across Australia entered the award, all with their eyes on the $5000 acquisitive prize.
Claire McArdle from Melbourne claimed the prize with her piece Snorkel.
Manager of the Griffith Regional Art Gallery, Riana Savage, said the event’s significance extended beyond Griffith and showcased emerging and established artists from across Australia.
“It’s important because it is actually promoting the development of contemporary jewellery and art across Australia by having the opportunity to participate in an event of this stature,” Ms Savage said. “We are hoping in the future people will be aware of the significance of this event and be proud of the collection and role it plays in developing the arts across the country.”
The award was founded by the Griffith Regional Art Gallery in 1992 following a jewellery exhibition titled: “Imagination and Metaphor”. These days, Griffith City Council sponsors the prize money given to the winner and the winning piece is added to the gallery's National Contemporary Jewellery Collection. The public can view the one-of-a-kind exhibit until September 11.
