The sculptures were moved from their birthplace in Pioneer Park on Monday in what the manager of tourism and economic development for Griffith City Council Greg Lawrence described as a mammoth effort.
“The heaviest of the sculptures was about four-and-a-half tonnes but the volunteers made it very light work,” Mr Lawrence said.
“As Grifith is renowned for we had a lot of volunteers put up their hand to help and they all made the work very easy for us.
“We were very thankful for the help of Dale McCleary with his crane and of course Noel Hicks and Alan Smith, Harvey and Lester from Pioneer Park, Luke Zwolsman and the staff from Parks and Gardens all put in a great effort.
With recent rains making driving heavy machinery in the park unsuitable with the upcoming celebrations so close Mr Lawrence said the team had worked hard to ensure all would be pristine for the centenary weekend celebrations.
“We brought with us some special mats because we knew the grass would be wet and we wanted to cause minimal damage to the lawn,” he said.
“We have five sculptures installed and we of course had to make sure we handled them very carefully because they are finished pieces of art now and we couldn’t just drop them like we did when they were just blocks.
“I really think the IOOF Park is going to be a fantastic area for both visitors to the city and for the residents of Griffith.
“It’s all looking good for the official opening on the fourth and fifth and it’s going to be a great birthday weekend with fireworks and many other great things on for everyone to enjoy.”
