However, for about 15 people at the Griffith PCYC polling booth a long working day has already begun.
There’s plenty to do before the first people vote for who they want to represent them in the Farrer electorate at 8am.
Denny Fachin, officer in charge of the booth, said about 3500 people were expected to cast their vote at the PCYC today.
He enjoys the role of officer in charge, saying he enjoys helping people.
“I am here to make sure things flow well here today. We are here to help people in any way we can,” Mr Fachin said.
Before the first person votes the ballot boxes will be checked by a scrutineer to ensure they are empty.
Staff are also counting the tickets that will be used to cast votes. The number of tickets will be cross referenced with the tickets in the ballot boxes tonight.
The boxes will be sealed and before they are counted after the last votes are submitted at 6pm a scrutineer will check to make sure the seal is in place to ensure the boxes haven’t been tampered with.
Mr Fachin said the polling booth would have a mix of people voting in the Farrer electorate as well as people who would be casting absentee votes.
He said if a person’s name was not on the electoral role for Farrer, they would cast an absentee vote.
Mr Fachin said this was not common – people who have moved may still be on registered in another electorate or for whatever reason their name may no longer be on the roll.
When the doors close at 6pm, Mr Fachin and his staff will count the votes.
They will be overseen by a scrutineer.
Mr Fachin expects his day will come to a close about 10pm.
