The small township of Ungarie will celebrate 100 years of football on Saturday whey host rivals West Wyalong-Girral in the round nine Northern Riverina League clash at Ungarie Recreation Ground.

To mark the occasion, Daniher will return home and has agreed to make a comeback for the occasion – on one strict condition.

“I’ll see how many numbers they have got first,” Daniher said.

“I'm not going to put any young blokes out.

“I’ll wait and see how the conditions are too, I’d rather be standing around the fire than running around but I'm happy to help out where I can.”

The prospect of 58-year-old Daniher returning to play with Ungarie has taken the community by storm this week.

It will be the first time Daniher has played for Ungarie since 1976.

He will join younger brother Chris, 50, in the Ungarie team.

“It should prove to be a great exhibition and an exciting day for the club,” Reece Archibald said.

As part of the celebrations, Ungarie will hold a black and white ball on Sunday night.

Daniher, who returned home in time for training on Thursday night, will stay the entire weekend to mark the milestone.

“It should be a good weekend,” he said.

“It’s a mighty effort, especially in recent times where it has been tough to put a footy side on the field.

“I’m rapt that they’re not only still around, but competing week in, week out.”

Not only is the club competing, they are the reigning premiers after grand final success last year. 

Daniher, a five-time premiership coach at Wagga Tigers in the 90s, admits he will be a little bit rusty come game time on Saturday.

“I haven’t played in a few years since having a run around in a few EJ Whitton games and thinks like that,” he said.

“I love my sport and keep active through playing tennis and basketball. That gives me exercise during the week.

“I’m pretty lucky that I got out of footy okay. I don’t have too many aches and pains, other than a bit of arthritis.”

Daniher is looking forward to some rare time on the family farm during his stay.
