Last Saturday at the Leeton & District Bowling Club, Jim Ovens and Dave Townsend beat Leeton duo Wayne Everett and Ross Reiher on Sunday in the final to take out the Riverina District Open Pairs.
The final didn’t start the best for Ovens and Townsend as the pair gave the home side three shots in the first end.
In the second end Hay picked up six shots and never looked back, going on to win 22-17.
Earlier in the competition, Ovens and Townsend first round was their tightest encounter on Saturday, May 14.
They took on Terry Geeves and Dave Painting and in a match that went down to the wire, the Hay duo snuck home 18-17.
This saw Ovens and Townsend play championship favourites, Peter Jones and Steve Hoffman from Darlington Point the following Saturday.
The Hay boys played some exceptional bowls to win comfortably 26-17.
Later that afternoon, Ovens and Townsend had to play another Darlington Point side in Frank MacDonald and Warwick Parnell.
The Hay side took out the quarter-final 21-18.
Competitors then pulled up stumps the day before returning early on Sunday for the semi-finals.
Ovens and Townsend came up against another favourite for the title in Michael Gooley and Craig Hodges from Leeton.
The two Hay men controlled the match by playing some excellent draw bowls and won 24-21.
Ovens and Townsend progress through to the Zone Finals at Young where they will proudly represent the town of Hay in July.
