The Blacks came into the game in Albury on the back of five straight losses but turned around their poor run of form to secure a 47-33 victory.
After running in the first two tries, Griffith let Albury back into the game.
The Steamers notched up four tries of their own to take the lead at half-time.
An inspired second half saw the Blacks – assisted by a never-say-die attitude – pile on the points to blast Albury off the park.
Griffith assistant coach Matt Vitucci said the side’s perseverance saw the Blacks notch up the win.
“It was our first win in Albury for a while – it was good,” Vitucci said.
“It was up and down for us. We opened up really well – in the first 15 to 20 minutes we went really well.
“We stuck to our structures and put on a couple before they struck back.
“In the second half, we kept our composure and eliminated their chances in the last 20 minutes. We showed a lot of character.”
Dan Bozic starred for Griffith in his return from a shoulder injury.
Bozic was named the Blacks’ best and was ably supported by Tao Mataora and Michael Stalley.
The back was one player to be removed from the Blacks injury list which for the first time in weeks wasn’t lengthened.
Vitucci said Griffith’s long list of injuries made it hard but also made the win more pleasing.
“It was a tough ask with a few of the boys missing,” Vitucci said.
“A few of the boys had to play two games. It was a tough ask to play so much footy over the weekend.”
Vitucci said the performance was far from perfect.
“Obviously we have a lot to work on but a there was a lot of positives,” Vitucci said.
“We need to work on our structures a bit but all in all it was good.”
Second grade also won – 41-14 – and the ladies had a comfortable 30-12 win.
