Adelaide United have won its first crown and Leicester City completed its own fairytale.
In this week’s At The Bar, Michael ‘Speedy’ Stratton and The Area News sports journalist Ben Jaffrey discuss the two historic wins.
Ben: There’s been a couple big days in the footballing world with Adelaide United and now Leicester City winning their respective competitions. Do you follow it at all?
Speedy: I do. I’m actually a Tottenham Hotspur fan.
Ben: Unlucky mate, they had the match in their hands and then they dropped their bundle.
Speedy: I’d liked to have seen Tottenham win but how can you not love the Leicester story. And paying $5000-1 at the start of the season.
Ben: It would have been nice to get a piece of that. I’d like to say I’d have thrown a couple bucks on it if I’d seen it.
Speedy: I would have definitely thrown $10 on it.
Ben: $50,000 down the drain, Speed. If only one of us could see into the future.
Speedy: Apparently a couple supporters did get on Leicester and they duly saluted. They deserve it though, it’s good to see the underdog get up.
Ben: Definitely, it’s good to see someone other than your Manchesters and Chelseas go well. Onto the local stuff mate. Do you follow the A-League at all?
Speedy: I like Perth in the A-League, don’t know why but I do.
Ben: You have to have a team to go for regardless of how much you follow it. I’m a pretty big token Sydney FC fan.
Speedy: You do, but I did watch the grand final. In front of a massive crowd, Adelaide were too good for the Wanderers. I thought Western Sydney would win it.
Ben: There was a fair bit of support coming for the Wanderers, especially us being in NSW and all.
Speedy: It was amazing to watch and the win was good for the game. It’s grown so much over the past four years.
Ben: No doubt, football is a force in Australia, it’s been massive in Griffith as long as I can remember. What do you think about the A-League moving the final around compared to AFL and NRL?
Speedy: Well AFL has to be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground – it’s tradition. NRL though, I wouldn’t mind Brisbane getting a chance to host it.
Ben: They may get a chance, there’s been talk of it for years. I like it played in Sydney, I think that’s a good tradition to uphold. What about the A-League though?
Speedy: I like it getting moved around, it’s something a bit different.
Ben: Different – like me and you I suppose.
Speedy: Speak for yourself.
