“It’s a sausage sizzle and just a simple little thing to say ‘thanks fellows’,” said chairman of the senior citizens centre advisory committee Ron Anson.
Users of the centre said they appreciated the help that had been provided to date.
“We are 101 per cent grateful,” said member Ginge Davies.
“I watch the progress every day and it’s wonderful, it’s progress to the advantage of all and we are so grateful for the help,” said Peg Jones.
The centre successfully secured a ‘building community partnership’ grant in 2014 allowing them to purchase the materials to build a storeroom to house the excess chairs and tables lining hallways and blocking access to disabled toilets within the centre.
They also received funding from Griffith City Council and the Griffith East Rotary Club however, they required some help with their next step needing the hands and expertise of Griffith tradies to tackle the building of the storeroom itself.
“I sent a leaflet out to Griffith builders and then I rang them up to ask if they would be interested in lending a hand,” Mr Anson said.
“I rang them in June 2015 and they all immediately committed to helping out now.”
“They’ve all said yes, I was surprised a little bit but you do hear of that happening a lot in Griffith.”
Volunteer builder Angelo Maloni helped to build the original centre in 1990 – 1991.
“I was here for the original building of the centre,” Mr Maloni said.
“It’s good to be involved, you have to help out.”
“Ron’s going all right and all the tradies are good guys they have all volunteered, and you’ve got people like Luke Zanotto helping out, who is a very community minded young man.”
Mr Anson said he was impressed with the help that had been offered to the senior citizens centre.
“You can judge the health of a community by those who volunteer to help out,” he said.
