But his battle hasn’t dulled Robin Mataora’s spirit.
Diagnosed with the disease before he’d even reached primary school, Robin’s life has always been an uphill battle.
He and his family hoped they were out of the woods when he went into remission just before entering kindergarten.
This wasn’t to be.
Three weeks ago he was told the cancer was back.
He’s been in and out of hospital since.
His teacher at Griffith Public School Lisa Sergi has made the trip down to Sydney to check up on him and remarked just how much of a shock the diagnosis was.
“There were no signs because he was such an energetic child,” she said.
“He’s not a child to ever complain or whinge.
"He's always happy, bubbly and most of all cheeky.”
Even two hours of chemotherapy a day can’t keep him down.
“We know he’s still in good spirits,” she said with a smile.
“He’s always playing Uno with the nurses.”
His fellow students have been a big help through this tough time as well.
“The students made cards for him, as well as the teachers and that’s lifted his sprits and he’s loved getting them,” Ms Sergi said.
“The kids were aware of his sickness when he was in kindy. They were asking a few questions about what happened to him and we had to say he had leukaemia again.
“But we explained that the doctors were looking after him and he’s in good hands.
“I’ve spoken to his mum and she is thankful for what the community is doing and every little bit helps.”
This will no doubt be a tough battle for Robin and his family and a bank account has been created to support them in this time.
If you would like to make a donation the account details are:
Country First Credit Union. BSB 802-097. Account Number 676 267.
A bake sale at the kiosk in town will also be held on May 10 with funds going to Robin with more events in the works.
