Miss Murphy, 18, died on Tuesday morning after a B-triple and van collided on the Sturt Highway near Maude.
About 9.30am police from the Deniliquin Local Area Command and emergency services were called to the intersection of the Sturt Highway and Maude Road following reports of a crash.
Miss Murphy was the driver of the van, but passed away at the scene.
The male truck driver was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Hay District Hospital in a critical condition.
The Sturt Highway was closed in both directions while specialist forensic officers examined the scene.
Miss Murphy’s friends and family have taken to social media to remember the “always smiling” and talented sportswoman.
She graduated from St Francis College last year after completing year 12 and was a valued member of the Leeton Phantoms Rugby Union women’s team.
Many of her team members and school friends have paid tribute to her online.
“As I wake up today hoping it was just a bad dream, but it's not,” Faith Kennedy wrote.
“My heart aches for your family, the baby Dianas and the Dianas, your school friends and friends.
“I will always love you and never forget you. Until we meet you at the try line.”
A post on the Phantoms Rugby Union Facebook page read “today our club experienced the tragic loss of one of our baby Dianas, Jess possessed the most beautiful soul, always happy with an infectious smile. Words can not do justice to how much you will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family - rest in peace Koala”.
Another post on the St Francis College boarding house Facebook page described the immeasurable loss.
“Our hearts are broken. Our place was a better world for having you in it. Long may your love live in the hearts of all those you met. Jess 'Koala' Murphy may you rest in the peace you always gave to others”.
