COUNCIL is closing in on a relocation of Griffith’s freight terminal, with a new site to be announced within weeks.
The terminal’s location in the centre of the CBD has been a source of frustration for the community and freight companies for many years.
An accident at the site in 2009 that saw a train overshoot the tracks and hurtle across Wakaden Street highlighted safety concerns and renewed calls for the relocation.
Griffith mayor John Dal Broi revealed yesterday council was working closely with several “interested parties” and expected to make an announcement soon.
The decision will be made in close consultation with local freight company Patrick’s, the heaviest user of the terminal.
“Patrick’s are really very keen to get out of Griffith – it’s a nightmare for trucks to come virtually into the centre of the town,” Cr Dal Broi said.
“The site we eventually come up with has to be suitable for them because they’re the biggest customer of the rail system here in Griffith.
“I’m hoping within a matter of weeks – not months – we will be making a positive announcement as to a future site for the terminal.”
Cr Dal Broi said the previous council had put a lot of work into the project and the new team was committed to seeing it through.
