One man has died and a second has miraculously survived after they were struck by a freight train in the NSW Hunter region.

The men, aged 21 and 19, were walking between East Maitland and Victoria Street railway stations when they were struck about 10.15pm on Friday.
Police are investigating whether the men decided to walk the 750 metres between stations after realising the service they wanted to catch was not stopping at East Maitland.
The older man fell under the train when it hit them and was killed.
The younger man miraculously survived with minor injuries after being knocked clear.
The police transport command is preparing a report for the coroner.
Chief Inspector David McBeath said the death was a reminder for people to stay clear of rail corridors.
"We have so many near misses almost every day across the state," Chief Inspector McBeath said.
