Car buffs to lap up Banna parade

THE birthright of Griffith petrol heads will be officially recognised this weekend when car lovers  from all over congregate to chuck laps down Banna Avenue.

The first Griffith’s Biggest Lap will be held from 6pm until midnight on Saturday to celebrate the age-old practice of “lapping”.

Inspired by “the old days”, organiser Robert Brown said the event would give people a chance to get their classic cars out of the garage and meet people with similar interests.

The concept is simple: anyone with a car or motorbike they would like to show off can bring it along to Banna Avenue where they can do laps, eat takeaway food and mingle with likeminded folk through their car windows.

“I was sitting up the street last weekend and I thought, why not get all the old cars together,” Mr Brown said.

“There are people coming from Wagga, Narrandera and Leeton as well as locally, so people should be able to pull up and have a chat like they used to do.”

Peter Centofanti, who also had a hand in organising the event, said it was not an excuse for  eople to “do burnouts and be stupid”.

He stressed it would be a family event and urged people to leave their alcohol at home.

The Detonators Car Club has also got on board and secretary Kim James has organised for people to take around buckets to raise money for charity.
