THE parents of slain fruit-picker Ranjodh Singh are set to make an emotional journey from India to Griffith as their crusade for justice continues.
Gurmel and Parmjit Singh hope to convince Australian authorities to reopen the case into their son’s 2009 murder and plan to erect a memorial near the Willbriggie roadside where his body was dumped.
Ranjodh Singh’s aunty, Sarita Sarita, said the family was desperate to unravel the events that led to the 26-year-old’s death.
“The family wants justice and they will talk to the police, to the courts, to anyone who can make a difference,” Ms Sarita said.
“They are not happy with the decision of the court. If Harry didn’t kill Ranjodh, then who did?”
She said Mr Singh’s parents would be accompanied by his brother, Satnam.
It comes as the man accused of killing Ranjodh Singh – but later found not guilty – Harpreet “Harry” Singh, 26, was this week released from Villawood Detention Centre after a successful appeal to the Migration Review Tribunal.
As part of his bridging visa conditions, he is forbidden from entering Griffith. Ranjodh Singh’s badly burned and disfigured body was found dumped on the side of Wilga Road on December 9, 2009.
Police soon arrested Harpreet Singh and husband and wife Gurpreet Singh and Harpreet Kaur Bhullar and charged them with murder.
But a move from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) saw the couple offered a plea bargain in February this year in exchange for rolling over against Harpreet Singh.
The plea deal backfired spectacularly, with the defence using the couple’s testimony to cast doubt in the jury’s mind over whether Harpreet Singh acted alone.
