It’s extremely hard, according to wheat farmer Nick Eckerman.
But if it is such hard work why do so many people around Australia still do it?
For Mr Eckerman, farming is in his veins.
“I suppose I haven’t done much else but farming, pretty much nothing else,” Mr Eckerman said.
“I enjoy being outside, even though we've got a bit of luxury nowadays.
“(I love) being able to not have to go to a nine to five job in an office, I’m probably not cut out for that.
“If I go to Sydney for three days it'll do my head in, dealing with traffic and all that, I’m quite happy being out here dealing with nature.”
A regular harvest day will generally start at 6am and days more than not finish after dark.
If Mr Eckerman doesn’t have to leave his header it’s been a good day.
That doesn’t happen that regularly though as he’s out and about fixing things and helping out his workers.
“I’m either on the header or organising and running around fixing things, wherever I’m needed I suppose,” Mr Eckerman said.
“The machines will break down, even though they're relatively new, they all break down.
“I think their reliability has increased over the past 10 or 15 years but it’s just like any machine, things break from time to time for no reason.
“We’ve got four Canadians working with us, they're all pretty switched on but sometimes you've got to help them out with a few things.”
Mechanical failure isn’t the only thing that farmers have to worry about.
Mr Eckerman has missed 10 days of potential harvesting time after wet weather and dry weather has stopped harvest.
Pests also poses a risk to crops.
“We’ve had, in the last 10 years, mouse plagues, grasshopper plagues, different insects that want to attack the crop,” Mr Eckerman said.
“There’s always something that is a challenge.
“Farming’s not easy but we're having a relatively good season, it'll probably end up a bit better than average.”
