A FACEBOOK page featuring sexually explicit photos of local women and underage teens has been removed after a fierce public backlash.
The "Griffith Naked Selfies" page, which first appeared last Tuesday night, called on local women to post naked photographs of themselves on Facebook.
More than a dozen photos were posted to the site – many without consent – and the page’s moderator had even begun listing names of local women he wanted photos of.
Late on Thursday afternoon, Griffith Police contacted Facebook after a barrage of complaints and had the page removed.
Police have launched an investigation in a bid to uncover who was behind the page.
“We are concerned about this type of material and it may well be a criminal matter,” Sergeant Brett Ryan said.
One of the underage victims of Griffith Naked Selfies, a local 15-year-old girl, said she was horrified when she saw a naked photo of herself on screen.
“I was told by a friend my picture was on there and I went and looked and it was a naked photo,” the year 9 student told The Area News on Friday.
“It made me feel disgusted and the person (who set the page up) should be criminally charged.
“I have no idea who gave them the photo; probably an ex-boyfriend.”
She said another school friend of hers had two photos posted to the page.
A second page, “Remove the Griffith Naked Selfies page” emerged on Thursday and by the weekend had attracted close to 200 “likes”, while the original page drew more than 1400 “likes” in less than 48 hours.
Some victims courted criticism from other Facebook users for having the private photos taken in the first place.
“If the girls had any self respect or brains, their bodies wouldn’t have been splashed all over fb! I mean seriously, would you ever completely trust anyone with a naked pic of yourself?” Amy Porter said.
Others defended the victims.
“People’s computers can easily be hacked, and private photos can become public,” Dale Forbes said.
“Not everyone who ends up naked on the internet gave their permission. That sort of ‘they brought it on themselves’ mentality is ridiculous. It’s like saying ‘she was dressed like a slut so it’s her own fault if she got raped’. If a chick posts pics herself, it’s her perogative. If someone else takes it upon themselves, they are just d.......s.”
Anyone with information about the person behind the Griffith Naked Selfies page should call Griffith Police on 6969 4299.
