The Griffith-raised footballer inked a one-year-deal with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles for the 2016 season.

The motivation behind the switch was a simple one – to get a better chance to play NRL football.

“I’m just looking for an opportunity and Parramatta didn’t give me that opportunity,” Lavaka said.

“Once one door closes, another one opens.

“I’ve had some rough patches with my performances but I believe, with Trent Barrett as the coach, he truly believes in the talent and potential I have.

“All I can do is train hard and prove to him that I do have the ability.”

Lavaka topped the National Youth Competition try-scoring list in 2014 and earned a start in Parramatta's Nines squad this year.

After signing for just the one year, Lavaka knows he has to play out of his skin to gain a longer contract.

The Waratahs junior will be fighting for positions with the likes of Jorge Tafua, Peta Hiku and young gun Tom Trbojevic.

Whilst he feels at home on the wing Lavaka is happy to do whatever it takes to make his dreams a reality.

“I’ve set a few (goals). At the moment I’m just training hard to fulfil that dream of playing in the NRL,” Lavaka said.

“I’ve been away from Griffith for a number of years and all that hard work is leading up to something that I’ve always wanted.

“Hopefully, all the hard work pays off and hopefully, I get a chance.”

The Waratahs junior has been training with Manly for several weeks now.

He joins a slew of new players to the club which includes hardman Martin Taupau and New Zealand international Lewis Brown.

Lavaka said there was a tight bond amongst the playing group at Manly led by the senior players.

“It’s been a good transition (from Parramatta to Manly),” Lavaka said.

“I’ve had the likes of senior players – like Jamie Lyon and Nate Myles – and blokes of that calibre and experience welcoming me. 

“It has brought me a lot of confidence and made me comfortable with the move.”
