Local women from agencies and organisations which assist Griffith-area women in times of need joined forces to prepare for the event and Linking Communities Network chief executive Yvonne Wilson said it was a very important day.
“It's about men taking some responsibility that this is occurring,” she said.
“In the majority of cases - not dismissing that there are violent woman in relationships - men are the main perpetrators.
“So we invite them down to raise awareness and take responsibility, to say ‘we're standing up towards violence against women’.”
The walk proceeds down Banna Avenue and finishes at Memorial Park, where Griffith East Rotary Club will run a sausage sizzle with proceeds going to Griffith Women’s Refuge
Ms Wilson hoped that the event would give people the strength to speak up if they do witness domestic violence.
“Violence is not OK in any relationship, male or female,” she said.
“If you know someone who suffers from domestic violence you should step up and say something, talk to them and say 'hey mate, what do you think you're doing.’
“It doesn’t just affect those in the relationships either.
“It affects the children, the extended family of both parties and it’s just unacceptable.”
Held for the second year, Walk A Mile In Her Shoes was organised by Soroptimist International Griffith, which is part of the network of 80,000 club members in 132 countries and territories working to help educate, empower, and enable opportunities for women and girls around the world.
It engages and enables men and boys to lead this social change. In Australia, the White Ribbon organisation works to prevent violence by changing attitudes and behaviours. Their work is driven through violence prevention initiatives with communities and schools.
