Late last year the state government announced Murrami Public would be merging with Whitton Public School.
The Whitton-Murrami Public School has been officially operational since the start of this year.
However, an advertisement in the classifieds section of The Irrigator called for expressions of interest for enrolments for 2016 to the now vacant Murrumi Public.
According to Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli’s office, the advertisement was merely a formality.
It remains unlikely the school will re-open.
“The notice was part of the standard procedure for a school in recess,” an office spokesman said.
The Whitton-Murrami Public School has an enrolment of 35 students, a teaching principal and two full-time teachers. Any school enrolments in the Murrami area have been encouraged to do so at the Whitton-Murrami Public School.
Murrami Public’s school grounds have been maintained since it went into recess. The Department of Education said it would continue to monitor the educational needs of students in the Murrami and Whitton communities.
“Any decision about the Murrami site will only be made following the consideration of the educational needs of students,” a department spokesman said.
However, community members still believe the advertisement created unnecessary confusion.
Former Independent candidate for Murray Helen Dalton spoke out on the issue earlier this year and wondered why enrolments were being called for if there was no intention to re-open Murrami Public.
“I think it’s an appalling show,” she said.
“It’s definitely a case of policy on the run. There has been no consultation with the community along the way.
“I believe closing Murrami Public School is still the wrong decision.”
