Anh Do will be bringing his show The Happiest Refugee Live to town tonight.
“It’s quite a show and story that I will be bringing to Leeton. My family and I have been through a lot."
- Comedian Anh Do
The show incorporates humour, as well as stories, photos and filmed pieces of Do’s life story and how he came to live in Australia.
Do travelled to Australia in 1980 on an eight-metre fishing boat with 47 other Vietnamese refugees.
Sick with dehydration and one person already dead, the journey was the first of many struggles for the young Do, who overcame all manner of difficulties throughout his life to study law and, in 2008, be named Australia’s Comedian of the Year.
Today he is one of Australia’s most sought after stand-ups, as well as a talented writer, actor, producer and corporate entertainer.
Do said he was looking forward to coming to Griffith.
“It’s quite a show and story that I will be bringing to Griffith.
“My family and I have been through a lot.
“Even though we made it to Australia, we were very poor.
“The show goes through all of that, but there’s also plenty of laughs in there too,” he said.
Do’s show is also a book, which will soon be turned into a movie after it struck a chord with one particular well-known actor.
“Russell Crowe read the book and loved it … so he’s going to turn it into a movie, which is pretty cool,” he said.
“I’m very excited about that.”
Do said he didn’t get nervous taking to the stage for shows.
“I’ve been doing this particular show for a number of years and I just love it,” he said.
“My main aim is to get out there and have fun, tell my story and make people laugh. I love making people laugh.”
Do has received rave reviews about his book.
“The Happiest Refugee” is both Anh Do’s debut in the literary industry, and a bruisingly honest depiction of his life to date.
“The book starts with Do’s parents meeting and falling in love in war torn Vietnam, and tracks a young Anh as he and his family journey from their homeland to a refugee camp in Malaysia and finally Australia,” said one reviewer.
