The Jets developed a reputation as a Jekyll and Hyde team in first grade last season, their sometimes dramatic form swings from week to week making them a hard side to get a read on.
Yenda captain Brett Hazelman knows first hand the Jets are often their own worst enemy. He said finding more consistency would unlock the side’s full potential.
“Last year we had too many occurrences where our good was very good and our worst was really bad,” he said.
“We need to bridge the gap a bit and be more consistent because I believe with the squad we had last year, if we hold that together, we should be right up there again.”
Hazelman has reported good numbers at training but doesn’t think the Jets will field their strongest 11 for the first few weeks of the season, which starts with a one-day match against Coro at Wade Park on Saturday.
“We’re going to be a few players short as far as getting our best squad for A grade on the field this week due to other commitments,” Hazelman said.
“It could be a bit of a struggle for the first couple of weeks.
“But I think we’ll field a strong team eventually.
“We haven’t lost many players from last year and we’ve picked up a few who won’t come out during the first round.”
Coro captain Haydn Pascoe is also still to finalise his squad for the opening round but is confident the Cougars will once again be premiership contenders.
The Cougars were the hard luck story of last summer after missing finals by four points.
Pascoe said Coro could avoid a repeat of that disappointment by making a strong start.
“It just boosts the confidence of the boys to get that win straight away,” Pascoe said.
“Not that it’s not there already, but getting off to a good start always gives off good vibes around the camp.”
The Cougars didn't beat the Jets in either the one or two-day format last summer, and Pascoe expects another tough contest to open the season.
“Yenda always have a very good side,” he said.
“We won’t be taking them lightly out there, that’s for sure.”
