Police were at the scene where smouldering wreckage lay next to a burnt tree.
Ambulance NSW responded to an emergency call at 2.45pm on Murrumbidgee River Road about 7km from the Carrathool turn off. It is believed the vehicle hit a tree and burst into flames.
Inspector John Wadsworth from Griffith police said the driver of the car was killed in the crash.
“A person came past while the vehicle was alight and called emergency services,” Inspector Wadsworth said. “There was only one occupant.”
Inspector Wadsworth said a report was being prepared for the coroner and formal identification of the driver may take some time.
Detectives had established a crime scene on Wednesday afternoon.
The section of Murrumbidgee River Road where the accident occurred was between the Bringagee Road and Carrathool Road intersections and was part of Carrathool Shire Council’s local road network.
Carathool Shire mayor Peter Laird declined to comment on the matter.
