West is attending university and will likely only be available during the holidays. Considering the speedster took 33 wickets at 8.61 last summer, Hanwood face a big task replacing him.
But Catanzariti said West's absence would give other bowlers an opportunity to shine.
“I think it’ll give Charlie Cunial a chance to step up,” he said. “He’s only a young bloke and was a No.2 bowler for us last year. Dean Wynne is also going to be there, so we’re looking all right.”
Hanwood were minor premiers last summer, but Catanzariti said the team’s finals fadeout remained a sore point.
“We were a bit disappointed last year with how we bowed out in a couple of close finals losses,” he said. “Hopefully we can do better this year, but it’s hard to know because you don’t know what everybody else has.”
Hanwood open their season against Leagues Club at Exies No.1 on Saturday.
