Inspector Scott Wilkinson said a break-in on Sunday night turned into an “act of cruelty”.
“A person broke in to a house on Watson Road and stomped a cat to death,” Inspector Wilkinson said.
“We don’t know why they’ve done it, whether it was random or a targeted attack on the resident.”
The incident occurred between 6pm and 9.30pm and a Playstation gaming console was also stolen.
“We regard this as extremely serious as it involves an act of aggravated cruelty against an animal which only adds to the trauma the victim must be feeling at having their premises violated,” he said.
The cat had given birth to kittens three days earlier and the girl who owned the cat was devastated as she tried to keep the little ones alive and find homes for them.
On Saturday night in Hillston, a man was smashed in the face with the butt of a rifle during a home invasion.
A 23-year-old man was alone in his Molesworth Street home when two men forced their way in between 7.05pm and 9.45pm.
One of the invaders was armed with a hammer, the other with a rifle.
Inspector Wilkinson said the two men were unknown to the resident, who sustained facial injuries as a result of the attack.
“Detectives have begun an investigation and want to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time,” Inspector Wilkinson said.
Police were also investigating an incident at Tharbogang at 1.15pm on Friday afternoon where a man was threatened with a gun.
“Police executed a search warrant on a property and recovered an air rifle,” Inspector Wilkinson said.
Residents were also reminded to check their home security after a house on Macarthur Street was broken into while the residents were away.
Police also had their hands full on the roads.
A 43-year-old man blew the bag at 12.15am Monday on Kookora Street, returning a reading of 0.087. Hours later, a 51-year-old man was stopped for a random breath test (RBT) and blew 0.053. Both men were issued court attendance notices.
Two drivers with suspended licenses were stopped separately and issued court attendance notices. One of them, a 42-year-old man from Hanwood, was also driving an unregistered car.
A 26-year-old disqualified from driving until 2021 was caught on McNabb Crescent on Sunday afternoon after he tried to avoid an RBT. Officers approached the man after he reversed into a driveway and issues him with a court attendance notice.
Inspector Wilkinson said investigations into the violent incidents were continuing and asked anyone with any information to come forward and contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
