Then his bottom lip started to swell and go blue. Then his face went red. His mum Dee Henderson called for an ambulance while dad, Alem, gave a home injection of adrenaline with an Ipupene auto injector. Aiden, who is allergic to dairy and other products, was put on a drip and was stabilised in hospital after four hours.

Mrs Henderson said they were excited when they found the drink at their local supermarket in Perth. "With all his food allergies its hard to find things for him," she said. "It said 'dairy-free' on the label. So when he had a reaction we were wondering what it was that had caused it.

"Someone from NSW Health Department called last Friday and told me the drink contained undeclared dairy."

The drink, which comes in banana, chocolate and coffee flavours, was withdrawn from sale and an alert was put on the Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia website on August 29.

NSW Health posted on its website that Mascot-based FAL Healthy Beverages Pty Ltd had recalled batches of its Coco Joy flavoured coconut milk drinks, sold in independent retailers in Western Australia and South Australia.

It warned consumers with an allergy or intolerance to dairy milk not to consume the product.

The company said in a statement to the Sun Herald it was concerned to hear that an allergic reaction was suffered by a customer who had consumed its flavoured coconut milk, which is manufactured in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia.

"After becoming aware of the possibility that this batch could contain milk proteins, Coco Joy ceased distribution of the flavoured coconut milk and engaged an external laboratory to conduct extensive allergen testing," the company said.

"Coco Joy consulted the manufacturer of the Flavoured Coconut Milk to identify the cause to ensure that the problem is no longer present. Coco Joy is dedicated to providing high quality coconut products that are dairy allergen free to its consumers and will continue to do so. We encourage Australian companies to join with us in scrutinising products manufactured overseas to an even greater extent so that incidents like this are avoided."

IBISWorld says non-dairy milks are expected to grow over the next five years as the trend becomes part of mainstream food and beverage consumption. Coconut milks make up 4.1 per cent of an industry expected to be worth $145 million in 2015-16.

Mrs Henderson said Aiden had multiple allergies and asthma.

"Our issue is the labelling. I think it will be a long time before I trust a label again. We were lucky that was all that happened to us. We might not be so lucky next time," she said.
