It is proposed that a sculpture would adorn the median strip at the connection of Yambil Street to Kooyoo Street.
The sculpture would be large enough to be easily seen from both Kooyoo and Yambil Streets.
It would be surrounded by plants and seating with pedestrian crossings leading to the strip.
“It would be a really a meeting place in Yambil Street once it’s calmed down and more people use the street,” Griffith City Council project planner Mr Farnell said.
“That location, which is just a bit of gravel at the moment, would be perfect.”
Mr Farnell said one of the key initiatives was to beautify the street with street trees to encourage people to visit Yambil Street.
“Analysis from the strategy found that Yambil Street houses a significant portion of our professional and community services but the street is uninviting to people and a poor reflection of the businesses and services in the area,” he said.
“The strategy proposes to redevelop Yambil Street to be inviting to pedestrians and cyclists by introducing traffic calming measures, additional street trees and landscaping, consistent and quality paving surfaces and seating.
“It is envisaged that the development would attract considerable foot traffic along the street and assist existing businesses, while attracting new businesses to the area.”
Pedestrian crossings would be in key places along Yambil Street to calm traffic and make it easier for people to explore the street.
Yambil Street is also one of the proposed streets to home a bicycle lane to facilitate east-west cycling movement through the city centre.
This could be done several ways.
One would be to wipe out one side of the road’s parallel parking.
The other would be to have the bicycle lane next to the parallel parking spots.
Banna Lane, Canal Street, Olympic and Railway Streets are other potential sites for a east-west bicycle lane.
